Materials

  • 5 ozs. 4-ply wool; ¼ oz. contrasting colour, small amount of second contrasting colour for elephant pockets;
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/Metric 3.25 and 2.75mm needles;
  • 10 buttons.

Measurements

Width around underarm, 24 inches;

length from top of shoulder 14½ inches;

length of sleeve at underarm, 10½ inches with cuff turned back.

Tension

7½ stitches to 1 inch.

Pattern

Note: This is worked in one piece to underarm.

Using smaller needles cast on 181 sts.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row: P1, * K1, P1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

Girl

7th row: (K1, P1) 3 times, cast off 2, rib to end.

8th row: Rib to last 6 sts., cast on 2, (K1, P1)3 times.

Boy

7th row: K1, * P1, K1, repeat from * to last 8sts., cast off 2, rib to end.

8th row: (P1, K1) 3 times, cast on 2, rib to end.

Both Girl and Boy

9th row: Like 1st row.

10th row: Like 2nd row.

Repeat 9th and 10th rows once.

13th row: K1, (P1, K1) 6 times, slip these 13 sts. on a safety-pin; using larger needles inc. once in next st., * K10, inc. once in next st., repeat from * to last 13 sts., place these 13 sts. on safety-pin.

14th row: Purl 170 sts.

Continue working in stocking st. on 170 sts. till work measures 9½ inches from commencement, ending with a purl row.

Next row: K36, cast off 10, K78, cast off 10, K36.

Continue working on last 36 sts., dec. 1 st. at armhole edge in every row till 32 sts. remain.

Work 19 rows without shaping.

Next row: K19, K2tog., K11.

Work 2 rows in stocking st.

Next row: Cast off 3 sts., purl to end.

Next row: K18, K2tog., K8.

Work 2 rows.

Next row: P2tog., purl to end.

Next row: K17, K2tog., K7.

Work 2 rows.

Next row: P2tog., purl to end.

Work 5 rows, ending at neck edge.

Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Work to last 12 sts., turn.

2nd row: Work to end.

Cast off.

With wrong side of work facing join in wool and purl across 78 sts. for back.

Continue in stocking st., dec. once each end of needle in every row till 70 sts. remain.

Work without shaping till work measures same as front at armhole edge.

Shape Shoulder:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 12 sts., turn.

3rd row: Work to end. Cast off.

Join in wool at armhole edge and work on remaining sts. to correspond with left side.

Borders

Using smaller needles slip 13 border sts. back on to needle.

Continue in rib, repeating the buttonhole rows in 9th and 10th rows and every following 13th and 11th rows till 9 buttonholes are worked.

Work 6 rows, leave on needle.

Work other border, omitting buttonholes.

Join up shoulder. With right side facing K1, (P1, K1) 6 times, pick up 11 sts. along neck edge to shoulder seam, 25 sts. across back, 11 sts. along neck edge to front band, K1, (P1, K1) 6 times across border sts.

Work 9 rows in rib on these 73 sts., making a button-hole to correspond with border in 5th and 6th rows.

Cast off loosely.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using smaller needles cast on 48 sts.

Work in rib of K1, P1 for 3 inches.

Change to larger needles.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

Inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row till there are 64 sts. on needle.

Work without shaping till work measures 10½ inches with cuff turned back.

Cast off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. Then dec. once each end of needle in next and every alt. row till 30 sts. remain.

Cast off 10 sts. at beg. of next 3 rows.

Pockets

Using larger needles and light wool cast on 24 sts.

Work 18 rows in stocking st. from one of the charts. Then 6 rows in rib of K1, P1. Cast off firmly.

To Make Up

Press lightly. Sew in sleeves. Sew up sleeve seams.

Sew borders in position. Sew on buttons.
