Alice Baby Cardigan

Free knitting pattern for a baby's cardigan with vertical lace panels

from Patons Knitting Book No. 357

Size and Materials

Patons Beehive Baby Wool or other fine fingering weight wool

Size A: 18 inch underarm – 2 ozs.

Size B: 20 inch underarm – 3 ozs.

Length from top of shoulder: Size A -10 ins. , Size B – 11½ ins.

Length of Sleeve from underarm: Size A -7 ins., Size B – 8 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Old UK sizes 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm

Six Small Buttons.

Gauge

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width on the larger needles.

Pattern

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown thus [B-…].

The Left Front

Using smaller needles, cast on 32 [B-36] stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last 2 sts., K2.

Rep. 1st row fifteen times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K23 [B-K27], P2, K1, K2tog, yo, K2, P1, K1.

2nd row: K2, P5, K2, P22 [B-P26], K1.

3rd row: K23 [B-K27], P2, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, P1, K1.

4th row: K2, P5, K2, P22 [B-P26], K1 **.

Rep. from ** to ** eleven [B-fourteen] times, then 1st and 2nd rows once.

In next row: Cast off 3 [B-4] sts., K20 [B-K23], P2, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, P1, K. 1.

Keeping continuity of patt. dec. once at armhole edge in every alt. row four times, whilst at same time dec. once at
front edge (inside patt.) in every following 4th row twice.

Continue dec. once at Front edge in every 4th row until 17 [B-19] sts. remain.

Work 8 [B-10] rows without shaping.

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 8 [B-9] sts., turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Right Front

Using smaller needles, cast on 32 [B-36] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row fifteen times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, P1, K2, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, K1, P2, K23 [B-K27] .

2nd row: K1, P22 [B-P26], K2, P5, K2.

3rd row: K1, P1, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, k1, psso, P2, K23 [B-K27].

4th row: K1, P22 [B-P26], K2, P5, K2.

Keeping continuity of patt., work to correspond with Left Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Back

Using smaller needles, cast on 66 [B-74] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row fifteen times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twenty-four [B-thirty] times.

Cast off 3 [B- 4] sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 52
[B-58] sts. remain.

Continue without shaping, until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 8 [B-9] sts., turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 16 [B-18] sts., turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 38 [B-42] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from* to end of row.

Rep. 1st row fifteen times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1 .

Continue in stocking stitch, inc. once at each end of needle in 3rd and every following 8th row until there are 50 [B-54] sts, on needle.

Continue without shaping until work measures 7 [B-8] ins. from commencement.

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 24 [B-26] sts. remain.

Work 1 row without shaping. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Front Band

Using smaller needles, cast on 8 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

2nd row: Like 1st row.

3rd row: K2, P1, K1, yo, K2tog, P1, K1.

Continue in rib, making a buttonhole as in 3rd row in every following 12th [B-14th] row from previous buttonhole, until 6 buttonholes have been worked.

Continue in rib without further buttonholes until band is long enough to fit along fronts and across back of neck.

Cast off in rib.

To Make Up Cardigan

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves placing seam to seam.

Sew Front Bands in position.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Finally, press all seams.
