I used approximately 40gm unknown green 8ply (DK) wool for the background and scraps of various colours for the stripes.
20sts and 28 rows to 4 inches (10cm) over st st on 4.5mm needles, or needles needed to obtain gauge.
Using background colour, cast on 47sts and work st st in stripes as follows:
1st stripe: 9 rows background colour
2nd stripe: 1 row contrast colour 1
3rd stripe: 1 row contrast colour 2
Repeat these stripes 5 times, then work 9 rows background colour. Cast off.
Work vertical stripes using chain st embroidery, matching the colours to the horizontal stripes. Begin at the centre and work, leaving 6 sts between each set of vertical stripes.
