For the center square, you can either pick up and knit or cast on 40 stitches. If you pick up and knit, this is row 1.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2 and all WS rows of lace pattern: Purl.
Row 3: K3, *yo, ssk, k6; rep from *, end last rep k3.
Row 5: K1, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3; rep from *, end last rep k2.
Row 7: Repeat row 3.
Row 9: Knit.
Row 11: K7, *yo, ssk, k6; rep from *, end k1.
Row 13: K5, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3; rep from *, end k3.
Row 15: Repeat row 9.
Row 16: Purl
Repeat rows 1 – 16 twice, then do rows 1 – 8 once more. Bind off.
Finishing
Sew cable strips to sides of lace square. Sew mitered corners. Block.
