Oddball Sampler Afghan Square #29: Applied Triangles

Applied Triangles Sqaure

Materials

I used approximately 30gm blue 8ply (DK) wool for the background approx 10gm for the border, and scraps of red and green for the triangles and tassels

Tension

20sts and 40 rows to 4 inches (10cm) over garter st on 4.5mm needles, or needles needed to obtain gauge.

Abbreviations

YO = yarn over
inc = Increase by knitting into the front, then into the back, of the next stitch.

Technique

Make two triangles as follows:

Cast on 1 sts, Then work every row as follows:
YO, knit to end, turn
Continue until you have 24sts, put onto a st holder and leave

Background:

Using dark blue, and beginning with a wrong side row, cast on 32sts and knit 31 rows garter st.
Attach 1st triangle as follows:
K4, *knit 1 st of triangle together with 1 st of background, rep from * to end of triangle, K4

K 25 rows, add 2nd triangle, K 7 rows

Do not cast off

Change to border colour and knit across the row, place marker, then pick up 32sts along remaining 3 edges, placing a marker after each 32nd st (128sts)

Work border in the round as follows:

1st row: Purl
2nd row: Inc, knit to last st before marker, inc. Repeat to end of round

Repeat these 2 rows until you have 44 sts between markers (176sts total).
Cast off.

Take 4 strands of yarn and thread through the yarn overs down the sides of the triangles, tie into neat tassels at the point and trim.
