Poppy Potholder

Poppy shaped potholder

This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

  • American Thread Company “Puritan” Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton, article 40- 1 250 yd. Ball White
  • “Star” Pearl Cotton, article 90, size – 1 50 yd. Ball Red.
  • 1 yd. each Yellow and Black”Star” Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, article 50 for Embroidery
  • Steel Crochet Hook No. 7/1.65mm.

Pattern

With White, ch 9, 2 sc in 2nd sc from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts of ch,  3 sc in end st, working on other side of ch, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts,  1 sc in same space with 1stst, join in 1st sc.

2nd Round: Ch 1, 3 sc in same space, 1 sc in each of the next 8 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 8 sc, join in 1st sc.

3rd Round: 1 sc in each sc on sides and 2 sc in each of the 3 center sc at each end, join.

4th Round: 1 sc in each sc on sides and 3 sc in center st at each end, join, drop White. (When changing color always complete last half of st with next color.)

5th Round: Attach Red and work 2 sc in each of the 5 sts at each end and 1 sc in each sc on sides, drop Red.

6th Round: With White, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) and work 1 dc in each sc on sides and 3 dc in each of the 3 center sts at each end, join, break White.

7th Round: With Red, 1 sc in each dc having 55 sc in this round, break Red.

8th Row: Start petals: Attach White in 6th sc to the right side from center st at end, ch 3, (counts as 1 dc),  dc in same space, * 1 dc in next sc,  2 dc in next sc, repeat from * 3 times,  1 dc in next sc (15 dc), ch 3, turn.

9th Row: 1 dc in each dc, ch 3, turn.

10th Row: * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc, repeat from * 6 times, ch 3, turn.

11th Row: Same as 9th row.

12th Row: * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.

13th Row: Same as 9th row.

14th Row: * 2 dc in next st,  1 dc in each of the next 2 sts,

repeat from * once, 2 dc in next st,  1 sdc in each of the next 5 sts (sdc: thread over needle, insert in sc, pull through, thread over and work off all loops at one time),  1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 5 sts, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 scs, repeat from * once, 2 dc in next dc,  1 dc in next dc, ch 3, turn.

15th Row: Decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * thread over needle, insert in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops,  repeat from *, thread over and work off 3 loops at one time).  1 dc in each of the next 9 sts,  1 sdc in each of the next 4 scs, 1 sc in each of the next 3 scs.  1 sdc in each of the next 1 scs, 1 dc in each remaining at decreasing 1 dc at end of row, ch 3, turn.

16th Row: Decrease in next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 10 scs, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sts,  1 dc in each remaining dc decreasing 1 st at end of row, ch 3, turn.

17th Row: Decrease in next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 9 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 2 scs, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts,  1 sdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in each remaining st decreasing 1 st at end of row, break thread.

Skip 1 sc of 7th round, attach White in next sc and work same as 1st petal.

Work 3 more petals in same manner.

With White, work a row of sc across top and up and down each side of each petal skipping the sc of 7th row between petals and working 2 sc at corners of each petal, break White.

Attach Red at lower edge of petal and work  * 1 sc in each sc up the side of petal, 2 sc in each of the 2 sts at corner,  1 sc in each sc across top of petal,  2 sc in each of the 2 sts at corner of same petal, 1 sc in each sc down opposite side of petal, sl st in the sc of 7th row between petals, repeat from * all around, break thread.

Work another section in same manner.

On front section with Black “Star” Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, embroider a row of French knots on inside of 1st Red circle, then with Yellow fill remainder of center with French knots.

With Red matching front and back section, crochet the 2 sections together as follows: sc in sc, ch 3, sc in same space, * skip 1 sc, 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * all around, join, break thread.

With Red cover a bone ring with sc and sew to holder as illustrated.
