Fish Potholder

Crocheted pot holder in the shape of a fish

This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

American Thread Company “De Luxe” Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton, article 346.
1-300 yd. Ball White

“Star” Pearl Cotton,
Article 90, Size 5. 2-50 yd. Balls Red.

“Star” Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, article 50,
1 yd. Black.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7/1.65mm

Pattern

With White, ch 2, 3 sc in 1st st of ch, ch 1 to turn each row.

2nd Row: Working in sc and picking up back loop of st only throughout, increase 1 sc at beginning and end of row.

Repeat 2nd row 5 times.

8th Row: Increase 2 sc at beginning and end of row.

9th Row: Repeat 8th row.

Repeat 2nd row 8 times, then work 4 rows even, drop White.

22nd Row: Attach Red (When changing color always complete last half of st with next color) and repeat 2nd row.

Work 1 row even, drop Red.

24th Row: Pick up White and repeat 2nd row.

Work 1 row even, drop White.

26th Row: Pick up Red and repeat 2nd row.

Work 1 row even, drop Red.

Repeat the last 4 rows 3 times.

40th and 41st Rows: With White, work even.

42nd and 43rd Rows: With Red, work even.

Repeat the last 4 rows twice.

52nd Row: With White, decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of row (To decrease: insert needle in st, pull through, insert needle in next st pull through, thread over and pull through all loops at one time).

Work 1 row even.

54th Row: With Red, decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of row.

Work 1 row even.

56th and 57th Rows: With White, work even.

58th and 59th Rows: With Red, work even.

Repeat 52nd, 53rd, 54th and 55th rows 3 times.

Repeat 56th, 57th, 58th and 59th rows.

Repeat the 52nd, 53rd, 54th and 55th rows.

80th and 81st Rows: With White, decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of each row.

82nd and 83rd Rows: With Red, decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of each row.

Repeat last 4 rows.

88th and 89th Rows: With White, work even.

90th and 91st Rows: With Red, increase 1 sc at beginning and end of each row, break Red.

Next 5 Rows: With White, work even.

97th Row: Increase 1 sc at beginning and end of row.

Work 3 rows even.

101st Row: 1 sc in each of the next 13 sc, ch 1, turn.

102nd Row: Decrease 1 sc at beginning and increase 1 sc at end of row.

103rd Row: Decrease 1 sc at end of row.

104th Row: Decrease 1 sc at beginning of row.

Repeat 103rd and 104th rows 4 times, then repeat 103rd row, break thread.

Attach thread in 1st free sc of 100th row and
work another tail section in same manner reversing shapings.

With Black “Star” Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, embroider eye and mouth in outline st as illustrated.

Crochet the two sections together as follows:

Starting at lower edge of head, with White, work a row of sc around head, break White.

Attach Red and working along top edge, * ch 3, 3 dc in same space, skip 3 rows, sc in next row, repeat from * across striped section to tail, break Red.

Attach White and crochet the tail sections together in same manner as head.

With Red, work a row of sc across lower striped section.

With Red, cover a bone ring with sc and attach to back of head section
