Potholder with a picture of a teapot on it
This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen or other size 10 pearl/perle cotton, 1 ball each of a light and dark color.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7/1.65mm

This amount is sufficient for 3 pot holders.

Pattern

Starting at one end, with dark color, ch 62 (to measure about 7 inches).

1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (60 dc, counting turning ch). Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: Dc in each dc across and in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Repeat the 2nd row 5 more times. Ch 3, turn.

8th row (1st row of chart): Holding light color along top of previous row, and working over it to conceal it, make dc in next 23 sts, leaving the last 2 loops of last dc on hook. Drop dark color, pick up light color and draw through last 2 loops, thus changing color in last dc of dark color. With light color, make dc in 3 dc, carrying dark color concealed in dc’s and changing color in 3rd dc as before. With dark color, make dc in each st, dropping light color after carrying it for 21 sts. Ch 3, turn.

9th row: Dc in next 11 dc, changing color as before in last dc; then work 9 dc of light color, 12 dc of dark color, 6 dc of
light color and 3 dc of dark color. Drop light color, and work in dark color over remainder of row. Ch 3, turn.

Work in this manner, following chart to top.

Fasten off light color and work 7 more rows of dark color. Fasten off.

This completes 1 piece.

NOTE: 1 square on chart is equivalent to 3 dc.

Chart for colourwork

Make another piece same as this, reversing colors

PAD – Cut flannel, muslin or any soft material, slightly smaller than crocheted pieces. Place between crochet, tacking to wrong side of one piece.

Place padding between 2 crocheted pieces and sew together edges of crocheted pieces.

Cord

Cut 2 strands of each of the 2 colors, each strand 2ΒΌ yards long.

Double the dark strands to form a large loop, pass light color strands through this loop and double these strands also (thus interlocking both colors). Twist these strands tightly.

Now double strands, folding at joining of colors and give them a second twist in the opposite direction.

Sew cord all around edges of pot holder, making a loop at one corner.
