Cookie Jar Potholder

Potholder in the shape of a vintage cookie jar
This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

American Thread Company “Puritan” Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton, article 40: 2-200 yd. Balls Yellow and “Star” Pearl Cotton, article 90, size 5 4-50 yd. Balls Blue will make Cookie Jar, Plate and Teapot Holders.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7/1.65mm.

Pattern

With Yellow, ch 21, sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in next st of ch, * ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts of
ch, repeat from * across row, ch 2, turn.

2nd and 3rd Rows: 2 sc in 1st sc (an increase ), ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * across row, ch 2, turn.

4th and 5th Rows: Skip 1st sc, 2 sc in next sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc, (pattern) repeat from * across row, ch 2, turn.

6th Row: Increase 1 pattern at beginning of row, then work even in pattern to within the last pattern, ch 1, 2 sc in 1st sc of last pattern (an increase), 2 sc in next sc of last pattern, ch 2 to turn each row.

Work 3 rows even in pattern.

10th Row: Increase 1 part ern at beginning and end of row, then work 5 rows even in pattern.

16th Row: Same as 10th row, then work 3 rows even in pattern.

20th Row: Same as 10th row, then work 5 rows even in pattern.

26th Row: Same as 10th row, then work 4 rows even in pattern, break Yellow.

31st Row: Attach Blue and work 10 rows even in pattern, break Blue.

41st and 42nd Rows: With Yellow, decrease 1 pattern at end of each row.

Next 4 Rows: Work even in pattern.

47th and 48th Rows: Same as 41st and 42nd rows, then work 2 rows even.

51st Row: Decrease 1 pattern at beginning and end of row.

52nd Row: Work even in pattern across row, then ch 5 for lid, turn.

53rd Row: 2 sc in 3rd sc from hook, ch 1, skip 1 st of ch, 2 sc in next st of ch, ch 1, then work in pattern across row, ch 5, turn.

54th Row: Work on ch same as opposite side, then work even in pattern across row, ch 2, turn.

55th Row: Work even, ch 2, turn.

56th Row: Skip 1st sc, sl sc in each of the next 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, then work in pattern across row to within the last pattern, ch 1, sl st in 1st sc of last pattern, ch 2, turn.

Repeat the last row 5 times, break thread.

Work another section in same manner.

On top section, with Blue, outline the lid as illustrated and embroider knob on lid using a satin stitch.

With Yellow, working on Blue band, embroider flowers using a lazy daisy stitch with French knot in center.

With Blue, crochet the 2 sections together as follows:

Attach thread, * ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip the length of a dc, sl st in next st, repeat from * all around.

Handles

With Blue, ch 32 and work 30 sdc on ch (sdc: thread over needle, insert in st, pull through, thread over and pull through all loops at one time), break Blue. Attach Yellow at lower edge and work 1 sc in each St.

Attach to holder as illustrated.

With Yellow, cover a bone ring with sc and attach to back of holder.
