Butterfly Potholder

Butterfly shaped potholder

This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

American Thread Company “Star” Pearl Cotton, article 90, size 5

2-50 yd. Balls Black.
4-50 yd. Balls Yellow.

Kapok or Cotton for Filling.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7/1.65mm.

Pattern

Body

With Black, ch 2 and work 3 sc in 1st st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: 1 sc in each sc working 2 sc in 1st and last sc, ch 1, turn.

3rd Row: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

Repeat last 2 rows 6 times, then work 22 rows even.

38th Row: 1 sc in each sc decreasing 1 sc at each side. (decrease: insert in st, pull through, insert in next st, pull through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), ch 1, turn.

Repeat last row twice.

41st Row: Same as 2nd row.

42nd Row: Same as 3rd row, then repeat last 2 rows once.

Next 4 Rows: 1 sc in each sc.

49th Row: Same as 38th row, then work 2 rows even.

Repeat last 3 rows twice.

58th Row: Decrease every other st, break thread.

Work another section in same manner.

Sew sections together on one side, fill with cotton and sew other side.

Right Wing

With Yellow, ch 20 and work 19 sc on ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: 1 sc in each sc working 2 sc in 1st and last sc, ch 1, turn.

3rd Row: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

Repeat last 2 rows 10 times.

24th Row: 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each of the next 22 sc, ch 1, turn.

25th Row: Decrease 1 st at beginning of row, 1 sc in each remaining sc, ch 1, turn.

26th Row: 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc, ch 1, turn.

Repeat last 2 rows 5 times, then repeat 25th row once, ch 1, turn.

38th Row: Decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of row, ch 1, turn.

Next 4 Rows: Repeat 38th row, break thread.

Skip 1 st of 23rd row, join thread in next st and work 1 sc in each remaining sc increasing 1 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: 1 sc in each sc decreasing 1 sc at end of row, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: 1 sc in each sc decreasing 1 sc at beginning of row and increasing 1 sc at end of row.

Repeat last 2 rows once.

Next Row: 1 sc in each sc decreasing 1 sc at end of row.

Next Row: 1 sc in each sc decreasing 1 sc at beginning and end of row, break thread.

Work left wing in same manner.

Sew wings together at center.

Join Black at lower edge of wing and work a row of sc all around wings increasing a sufficient number of times around shaped edges to keep work flat and decreasing at indented parts of wings sufficiently to keep work flat, break Black.

Join Yellow and work 4 rows in same manner, break Yellow.

Join Black and work 1 sc in each sc increasing in same manner, break thread.

With Yellow, embroider eyes using satin st, then embroider top of body as illustrated using outline st

With Black, embroider top of wing section as illustrated.

Dots are made in satin st, remainder of design is worked in outline sc using double strand of thread.

Work another pair of wings for back of potholder in same manner.

Sew wing sections together then sew to under section of body.

With Yellow, cover bone ring with sc and attach to butterfly behind head.
