Bumble Bee Potholder

Bumble bee shaped potholder

This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

American Thread Company “Star” Pearl Cotton, article 90, SIZE 5
2-50 yd. Balls Yellow.
4-50 yd. Balls Black.

Kapok or Cotton for filling.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7/1.65mm.

Pattern

Body

With Black, ch 22 and work 21 sc on ch, ch 3, turn.

2nd Row: Work 2 sc on ch, 1 sc in each sc, ch 3, turn.

Repeat 2nd row 3 times but do not ch 3 at end of last row, drop Black,  attach Yellow, (when changing color always complete last half of st with next color) ch 2, turn.

6th Row: Work 1 sc on ch, 1 sc in each sc, ch 2, turn.

Repeat 6th row 4 times.

11th Row: 1 sc on ch, 1 sc in each sc, drop Yellow, pick up Black, ch 2, turn.

12th Row: 1 sc on ch, 1 sc in each sc, ch 2, turn.

Repeat 12th row 4 times, ch 1, turn.

17th Row: 1 sc in each sc, drop Black, pick up Yellow, ch 1, turn.

Next 6 Rows: 1 sc in each sc, ch to turn each row, drop Yellow, pick up Black.

Next 6 Rows: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1 to turn each row, drop Black,  pick up Yellow, then work 6 rows Yellow, 6 rows Black, 6 rows Yellow, 2 rows Black.

50th Row: Decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of row.

51st Row: Work even in sc.

Repeat last 2 rows once, drop Black, pick up Yellow.

54th Row: Decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of row.

55th Row: Work even in sc, then repeat last 2 rows twice, drop Yellow, pick up Black.

60th Row: Decrease 1 sc at beginning and end of row.

Repeat last row 5 times, break thread.

Work another section in same manner.

Sew 2 sections together leaving an opening for filling.

Fill slightly with cotton and sew remainder of sections together.

Wing

With Black, ch 7, 3 tr c in 5th st from hook, 1 tr c in next sc of ch, 3 tr c in last st of ch, ch 4, turn.

2nd Row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 6 tr c, 2 dc in next tr c, ch 4, turn.

3rd Row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each dc working 2 dc in last dc, ch 4, turn.

Repeat 3rd row 5 times but ch 3 at end of 8th row to turn.

9th Row: 1 dc in each dc, ch 3, turn.

Next 7 Rows: Repeat 9th row.

17th Row: Decrease 1 dc at beginning and end of row (decrease: thread over, insert in st, pull through and work off 2
loops, thread over, insert in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops, thread over and work off all loops at one time).

18th Row: 1 dc in each dc, ch 3, turn.

Repeat last 2 rows twice, then repeat 17th row 7 times, ch 3, turn.

Next Row: Thread over, insert in sc, pull through and work off 2 loops,  * thread over, insert in next sc, pull through and work off 2 loops,  repeat from * across row, thread over and work off all loops at one time (top of wing), break thread.

Work another section in same manner.

With double strand of Yellow, embroider top of wing as illustrated using outline st

With Black, crochet the 2 wing sections together with a row of sc.

Work another wing in same manner.

With marching Colors, sew body sections together leaving an opening for filling.

Fill slightly with cotton.

Applique wing sections to top of body.

Head

With Black, ch 14 and work 13 sc on ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2nd row 7 times.

10th Row: 1 sc in each sc decreasing 1st and last st, ch 1, turn.

11th Row: Repeat 2nd row.

Repeat last 2 rows once, then repeat 7th row once, break thread.

Work another head section in same manner.

With double strand of Yellow embroider eyes in satin st.

Sew head sections rogether leaving an opening for filling.

Fill with cotton and sew remainder of sections together.

Sew head section to body.

With Black cover a bone ring with sc and attach to bumble bee behind head
