Princess Dress and Booties

crochet baby dress with shell stitch skirt, short sleeves and matching booties

Note: This pattern uses UK crochet terms.

UK DC = US single crochet, UK treble = US double crochet etc.

Materials and Size

  • Patons Beehive Lady Betty 3-ply
  • Frock and Bootees – 4 balls
  • Crochet hook UK size No 12/2.75mm/US C-2
  • 1½ yards of Narrow Ribbon.
  • Three Small Buttons.

The Frock: Length from top of shoulder, 15½ ins (or length desired) Width all round at underarm – 18 ins.

The Bootees: Length of foot – 3½ ins.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 6 trebles to 1 inch in width.

Pattern

The Frock

Begin at neck edge.

Make 59 ch, turn, 1 tr in 4th ch from hook, 7 tr into 7 ch, 3 tr into next ch, 9 tr, 3 tr into next ch, 17 tr, 3 tr into next ch, 9 tr, 3 tr into next ch, 9 tr, 3 ch, turn.

Next row: 10 tr, 3 tr into next tr, 11 tr, 3 tr into next tr, 19 tr, 3 tr into next tr, 11 tr, 3 tr into next tr, 10 tr, 3 ch, turn.

Continue in this way, until 10 rows have been worked from beginning.

Next row: 1 tr, 1 ch into 19 tr, miss 33 tr, 1 tr, 1 ch into each of next 34 tr, miss 33 tr, 1 tr, 1 ch into each of next 19 tr Join with a sl st.

Next row: 3 ch, 3 tr into 1st tr, (4 tr into next tr) four times, miss 1 tr, * 4 tr into each of next 5 tr, miss 1 tr, rep from * to end of row. (60 groups of tr).

Work 4 tr into centre of every 4 tr of previous row.

Rep this row, until skirt measures 11 ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Fasten off.

The Sleeves

With right side of work facing, commencing at underarm, work 20 groups of tr around armhole. Join with a sl st.

Next row: Work 4 tr into centre of each 4 tr of previous row. Fasten off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up

Thread ribbon through waist.

Make a bow of ribbon, and attach to yoke.

Sew buttons on left side of back opening, and work loops on right side to correspond.

The Booties

Make 38 ch

1st row: 2 dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc into each of next 16 ch, 2 dc into next ch, 1 dc into next ch, 2 dc into next ch, 1 dc into each of next 16 ch, 2 dc into last ch. Work through back of loop of each dc row, turn with 1 ch

2nd row: 2 dc into 1st dc, 1 dc into each of next 18 dc, 2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc, 2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into each of next 18 dc, 2 dc into last dc

3rd row: 2 dc into 1st dc, 1 dc into each of next 20 dc, 2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc, 2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into each of next 20 dc, 2 dc into last dc

4th row: 1 dc into each dc

Repeat 4th row eight times.

13th row: 3 ch, miss 1 dc, * 1 tr into next dc, 1 ch, miss 1 dc, rep from * to end of row.

14th row: 3 ch, (1st tr), 3 tr into 1st tr, * 4 tr into next tr, rep from * to end of row.

15th row: 4 tr into centre of each 4 tr of previous row.

16th row: Like 15th row. Fasten off.

Work another Bootee in same manner.

Sew up back and foot seam. Thread ribbon through holes at ankle.
